Instructions for Field Trip Assignments – ALL

***** THESE ARE PRELIMINARY EXPECTATIONS AND ARE SUBJECT TO SOME CHANGE *****

In this course, we shall be going on excursions for units 15 onwards. While you are at these particular places, you are expected to make notes (both visual and written) based on your surroundings. After each field trip you will be expected to write a reflection that indicates:


a. The types of things that you saw on your field trip and your impressions of the day. The thoughts that you put into these assignments must be yours and not those of your classmates.


b. You must pick about 20 objects or otherwise and translate them from English into the Bosnian language. For instance, if you saw a duck, you would write in your reflection that you saw a duck and indicate its Bosnian name: patka. I had questions in class about whether or not you could create an expanded picture dictionary for the purposes of this assignment and use pictures of the things you see (that you either take on site or find online). You are more than welcome to do this if you are not a good artist, but want to visually showcase your learning.


c. You will analyze the things you saw in your specific surroundings. For this part, you should be as specific as possible. Describe the people you observed, the things you witnessed, the colours around you; description is extremely necessary and appreciated for your analysis!!!!!*****
 

d. Keep in mind that what I am expecting here is a “diary for the day,” so it must be stylized as such. Your thoughts are necessary for these assignments. You must use personal pronouns and you must exhibit familiarity with the Bosnian language.


e. I will lecture during the field trips (but only for about 30 minutes or so, and I will NOT lecture at the restaurant, but will beforehand), so you must keep a detailed account of the things you learned during my lecture. This is because you will have to show knowledge of key terms. Key terms will come from lecture, so listening to key ideas in lecture will indeed be absolutely crucial. The rest of the field trip will be for you to explore the places we visit. Use this time wisely. I will only lecture in those places where there is a lot of open space such as the outdoors/arenas, etc., but WILL NOT lecture to an audience other than our class. Please also be aware that, only those enrolled in this course will be permitted to attend field trips.


f. Try to make this assignment as fun as possible, write about what you saw, who you talked to (your classmates/friends/the instructor/perhaps others you met), what you learned before, during, and after lectures…draw pictures perhaps to illustrate your findings or make charts to illustrate what you found or saw of interest. Use maps to indicate where in your hometown the places we go to are situated to add a sophisticated and elaborative approach to the subject.
 

g. You can divide your work in sections to make it easier for your reader to go through for example section one could be your diary of what you did, what you observed, etc. Section two could be a summary of the lectures and new terms you learned. The third section could be your analysis where you connect the field trip to your reflection and the course by translating those 20 terms that you learned during the field trip lecture. However, you will of course, learn more than 20 terms, but I want a list of at least 20 for marking purposes. You may, if you wish, include all of the terms I give, but I am looking for only 20, and there is no maximum set.


h. It is mandatory that you attend EVERY LECTURE AND FIELD TRIP and that you COMPLETE EVERY REFLECTION. The reflection assignments will contribute more to the final 35% of your mark than will the unit assignments. Thus, it is mandatory that you put forth your best effort and critical thinking and evaluative work into these tasks. The best assignments will have a good amount of content and will show superior levels of knowledge and understanding of concepts covered in lectures and readings.
 

i. Due dates for these assignments shall be established between the instructor and the rest of the class via votes. All due dates should be reasonable.


j. The length of the assignments MUST be at least 2 double-spaced pages using Times New Roman font which has to be 12 point and no smaller than 11 point. I am not concerned too much with length as much as I am about content. I want to see that you have learned something while on these field trips. Your reflections shall essentially be write-ups or “diaries” that illustrate your knowledge to either me or the teaching assistant (whoever the marker happens to be).

 

 

Assignments for LAN177

Most of the assignments in this course will be in the form of worksheets from your workbooks. These will be worth between 0.25 and 1 point each and will be due weekly.

All workbooks will be looked at weekly and a selection of readings will be marked during this time (end of each week).

Picture Dictionaries should also be attended to for every unit, however, I will ask to only grade a select few of your choosing.

Remember that for workbook activities/worksheets and the picture dictionaries a lateness penalty of -20% per day applies, whereas for the typed field trip assignments the lateness penalty is only -1% per day.

I will not accept ANY ASSIGNMENT after it is over 3 days late.

 

Information Regarding the First Unit Test – Units 1, 2, and 3

The first three units of the course will expect you to be able to identify yourself, to identify the composition of a family or families, and to identify objects and people within the context of a classroom clearly and cogently using the Bosnian language.

The following is a sample of possible testable subjects.

For unit 1 – Personal Identification: Osobna identifikacija these are the goals:

-say and write your first, middle, and family names

-spell your names orally using the Bosnian alphabet

-ask and answer, orally and in written form, questions about self-identification, including name, address, telephone number, birthdate, age, sex, birthplace, marital status, number and ages of children, number of siblings, height and weight, hair and eye colour, work history, education, name and age of dependents, schools and/or place of employment (current)

-answer simple questions regarding past schooling and work experiences

For unit 1 these are the questions you might be asked on the test:

-to identify personal and family relationships

-to be able to greet and introduce people, using appropriate forms of address and introduction

-to discuss differences between family life in Canada and Bosnia

-to discuss marriage customs and laws in Canada and Bosnia

For unit 2 Family: familije/obitelj you might be asked the following questions on the test:

Translate the following words from Bosnian into English:

Kcerka, sin, majka, tata, baba, djed, stric, tetak, strina, tetka, rodak, muz, zena, brat, macija, ocuh ----- there probably will be a list of about this much and you will have to translate a fraction of that.

Again the verb “ja sam” will come into play significantly for this unit.******

You will be asked to introduce yourself and members of your family and you must be able to write a simple sentence such as:

Ja sam Marko. Ovo je Renata. Ona je moja sestra = I am Marko. This is Renata. She is my sister.

You will have to be able to translate simple sentences such as:

Ja sam Jackson. Ovo je Manuela. On je moja zena = I am Jackson. This is Manuela. She is my wife.

Ja sam Jelena. Ovo je Stipe. On je moj brat = I am Jelena (Bosnian for “Helen”). This is Stipe “Bosnian pet form for “Stephen”). He is my brother.

For Unit 3 – Classroom: Ucionica the following are the unit goals:

-identify classroom objects

-respond to common classroom commands and gestures (as they would be used in a Bosnian classroom)

-know how to ask for help when you don’t understand something

For Unit 3 – Classroom: Ucionica you might asked the following questions:

You might be given a series of objects and you might be asked to circle the one that does not belong; for example:

Tabla, kreda, gumica za brisanje, hemniska ----- in this case, you would circle the word “hemniska” because it does not belong in the list. The others are objects that you would find around the chalkboard. In order they are: the chalkboard itself, chalk, chalkboard eraser, and lastly a hemniska is a pen.

You might be asked to translate some common questions asked by students within the classroom from English to Bosnian and from Bosnian into English; for example:

There will also be a series of words you must know in this unit such as:

You will be expected to translate as well as conjugate a chosen selection of the abovementioned terms. The test has not been made, so I am not sure how this part will work, but I shall of course; inform you fully when it has been organized.

EXPECTATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS PER UNIT

Below, I have included all of the details outlining what you should expect to learn in the rest of the units not discussed above. I have not included the unit verbs that you will also be introduced to, but I may as we get closer to the units in question. From the information below, you can also see what you will be expected to know for the unit tests and quizzes offered in this course. Indeed, items are subject to change.

For Unit 4 – Time and Weather: Vrijeme i Vrijemenska Prognoza the following are the course goals and expectations:

-you should be able to tell the time in the Bosnian language by saying that, “Sedam je sati,” meaning, “It is seven o’clock.”

-you should be able to tell the time in writing.

-you should be able to tell and write all of the days of the week and months of the year in chronological order in the Bosnian language as well as alternative ways of saying the months of the year in the Croatian language.

-you should be able to ask and respond to queries about both the day and date, orally and in written form.

-you should be able to read and write the date in numbers in the correct order by listening to an audiotape in Bosnian.

-you should be able to devise a daily, weekly, and monthly schedule in Bosnian.

-you should be able to identify a diverse range of different weather conditions.

-you should be able to recommend appropriate clothing to wear for differing weather conditions.

UNIT ASSIGNMENT: WRITE A WEATHER FORECAST FOR ONE WEEK KEEPING AN ACCURATE ACCOUNT OF THE WEATHER. TRANSLATE FROM ENGLISH INTO BOSNIAN EACH FORECAST AS INDICATED ON THE GIVEN WORKSHEET. THE ASSIGNMENT SHOULD BE SENT TO MY E-MAIL WITHIN A WEEK TIMEFRAME. NO PAGE LIMIT.

For Unit 5 – Money: Pare/Novac the following are the course goals and expectations:

-you should be able to identify the types of money that are used in Bosnia and their name in Bosnian.

-you should be able to recognize the different types of currency used in Canada and translate the name of this money using the Bosnian language.

-you should have knowledge of currency exchange rates.

-you should be able to subtract or add from a specified amount and identify the new total in Bosnian.

-you should be able to read Bosnian prices and convert to their Canadian equivalents and vice versa.

-you should be able to purchase an item and make change for a friend in the class.

-you should be able to identify the parts of a cheque the Bosnian language and compare that with Canadian cheques and identify differences (if any).

UNIT ASSIGNMENT: THERE WILL BE A MINI WORKSHEET FOR YOU TO COMPLETE WHICH WILL INTRODUCE YOU TO THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE CURRENCIES IN BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA AND CANADA.

For Unit 6 – Home: Dom/Kuca the following are the course goals and expectations:

-you should be able to identify the part of the city where you reside and other landmarks within a simple map employing the Bosnian language to discuss.

-you should be able to write your address translating certain words from English into Bosnian. For example, if you live on “3030 Flowers Street” you would write that you live on “3030 Ulica Cvijeca.”

-you should be able to describe where you live by indicating your address, the type of residential housing in which you live, the number of rooms and the conditions of the neighbourhood and, or building in which you live in the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to name the activities that are associated with particular rooms in the home. For example, the bedroom is used for the purposes of acquiring sleep.

-you should be able to express housing needs within the context of a home in the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to ask about the costs of housing employing the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to identify and respond appropriately to a household problem or emergency in the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to read warning signs on appliances using the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to ask someone to perform chores for house maintenance inside and outside the house in the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to name the proper person to contact if something in a house needs repair in the Bosnian language.

- you should be able to describe what is wrong in a residence in disrepair; describe what needs to be done, and whether or not it requires a repairman in the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to ask and inquire about a newspaper ad for renting an apartment or a house regarding location, number of rooms, utilities and prices in the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to choose the best apartment and give reasons for your choice(s) in the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to discuss tenant and management responsibilities using the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to complete a housing application form in the Bosnian language.

-you should describe the meaning of signs pertinent to housing.

-you should be able to describe the differences in housing conditions between Canadians and Bosnians. For example, the differences in architecture, the differences in apartment living, the differences and similarities in general housing, etc.

UNIT ASSIGNMENT: READ THE “CULTURE” SECTION ON PAGE 101 OF YOUR COURSEPAK AND COMPARE AND CONTRAST THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF HOUSING IN CANADA AND BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA. YOUR COMPARISON SHOULD BE 1 TO 2 PAGES IN LENGTH.

For Unit 7 – Clothing: Odjeca the following are the course goals and expectations:

-you should be able to name articles of clothing both verbally and in written format using the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to describe what you are wearing and how other individuals are dressed, including article and colours in the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to express clothing and colour likes and dislikes in the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to give someone a compliment about what they are wearing in the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to read price tags and identify the item, the size, and its price in the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to choose the correct clothing for various seasons employing the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to indicate a wide variety of places where one can find clothing to purchase in the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to ask where various items of clothing are situated within the context of a store using the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to express clothing preferences in terms of colour, pattern, material, price, and care, employing the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to suggest appropriate clothing for social situations, including job interviews using the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to use newspaper ads; store inserts and catalogues to comparison shop using the Bosnian language.

UNIT ASSIGNMENT: TO TRANSLATE ITEMS OF CLOTHING AND INDICATE PRICE EQUIVALENTS USING ADS GIVEN TO YOU IN CLASS AND ONES YOU COLLECT INDIVIDUALLY. THIS ASSIGNMENT SHOULD BE 1-2 PAGES IN LENGTH.

For Unit 8 – Body, Health, and Emergencies: Tijelo, Zdravlej i Hitna Slucajeva  the following are the course goals and expectations:

-you should be able to identify the parts of the body orally and in written format using the Bosnian language.

-after looking at a picture of a person who is sick, you should be able to fully identify the nature of his/her illness using Bosnian.

-you should be able to identify and match first-aid remedies and/or over-the-counter medicines to use for various health problems in the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to read times and dates on medical appointment cards in Bosnian.

-after looking at pictures of emergency situations, you should be able to tell which agency should be called (police, ambulance, poison control, fire department) using Bosnian.

-given a telephone book, you should be able to find and read the telephone numbers for the fire and police departments and carry out a conversation (imagined) with the said using Bosnian.

-using the Bosnian language you should be able to handle and emergency situation by calling the appropriate agency for assistance and giving information including name, address, and telephone number as well as the nature of the emergency in the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to read and tell a classmate the dosage on prescription medicine labels using the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to name ways to keep your body and teeth healthy utilizing the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to match the appropriate medical specialist with the specific illness in Bosnian.

-you should be able to indicate the nature of common illnesses and know whether or not they need a doctor’s attention using the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to inquire and respond to queries about dosages read on a medicine bottle using the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to name good health habits employing Bosnian.

For Unit 9 – Transportation: Promet/Transport the following are the course goals and expectations:

-you should be able to indicate directions: left, right, up, down, east, west, north, south, turn, straight-ahead, and stop as directed both verbally and in written form in Bosnian.

-you should be able to ask questions regarding directions and respond to questions orally posed in Bosnian.

-you should be able to ask and answer queries about the way(s) in which you come to school using Bosnian.

-you should be able to pose questions and respond to information about the local bussing system and its schedules in Bosnians.

-you should be able to ask for a bussing transfer using Bosnian.

-you should be able to respond to the bus driver’s requests in Bosnian.

-you should be able to explain the meaning of a multitude of traffic signals in Bosnian.

-you should be able to ask where the bus stop is situated in a given are in Bosnian.

-you should be able to (in Bosnian) understand how to call for the bus, train, and plane fare and schedules from one city/country to another.

-you should be able to offer direction to another student in the class and instruct him/her to go between two differing places specified by you using Bosnian.

-you should report to the class how and when you arrive at a location using Bosnian.

-you should be able to identify traffic signs orally and in written format in Bosnian.

-you should be able to complete a personal information form in order to obtain a driver’s licence…the application form will be in Bosnian.

UNIT ASSIGNMENT: YOU WILL WORK ON A SKIT/PLAY FOR THE CLASS REGARDING TRANSPORTATION OF YOUR CHOOSING. YOU MAY PICK FROM BUS, CAR, TRAIN, BICYCLE, SUBWAY, PLANE, OR BOAT. YOUR SKIT/PLAY MUST BE BETWEEN 5 AND 10 MINUTES IN LENGTH AND MUST BE IN BOSNIAN. ENGLISH MAY ALSO BE USED, BUT YOU MUST USE BOSNIAN TERMINOLOGY AS RELATED TO THE UNIT. THE INSTRUCTOR WILL HELP YOU WITH ALL ASPECTS OF THE SCRIPT. YOU WILL BE GIVEN APPROXIMATELY 3 DAYS TO WORK ON THIS ASSIGNMENT AND WILL PERFORM ON THE 4TH AND 5TH. THOSE ABSENT TO PLAY THEIR PARTS WILL RECEIVE A MARK OF “0.”

For Unit 10 – Food: Hrana the following are the course goals and expectations:

-you should be able to speak, read, and understand the names of common foods in Bosnian.

-you should be able to categorize food items as meats, diary products, fruit,  or vegetable, canned goods, baked goods, and paper goods using the Bosnian language.

-you should be able to dictate and write a shopping list of food you need or want using Bosnian.

-given a list of food items, you should be able to identify orally the container or quantity in which each is bought.

-given an ad listing food items and prices, you should be able to inquire and respond to inquiries about the prices of the items in question using Bosnian.

-given pictures of common foods in Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina you should be able to name them orally and match the written or spoken word with pictures.

-given two newspaper ads and one shopping list, you will make decisions as to where to go shopping and provide reasons why you chose the location in Bosnian.

-given a newspaper food ad, you should be able to ask and answer questions about items and their prices in Bosnian.

-given a food label to read, you should be able to report to the class on the weight or quantity of the item in question in both Bosnian and English.

-given two samples of the same item, but differing in brand, quantity and price, you should be able to report to the class which product gives more for your money using Bosnian.

-given a diagram of the location of items in a supermarket or store shelf, you should be able to ask and respond to questions about where various items can be found using Bosnian.

-you should be able to compliment food in Bosnian.

-you should be able to exchange recipes verbally to a classmate using Bosnian.

UNIT ASSIGNMENT: YOU WILL COMPARE AND CONTRAST THE TYPES OF CUISINE IN BOSNIA AND CANADA AND COMMENT ON THE PRICES OF FOOD IN THE TWO COUNTRIES. COMMENT ON THE MOST COMMON INGREDIENTS USED IN THE PREPARATION OF FOODS AND INDICATE THE METHODS BY WHICH FOODS ARE PREPARED. WHAT INFLUENCES DO YOU SEE IN THE CUISINE? WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE AVAILABILITY OF CERTAIN FOODSTUFFS IN THE TWO COUNTRIES? WHICH COUNTRY HAS A “RICHER” CUISINE? (THINK ABOUT HISTORY AND CULTURE WHEN ANSWERING SOME OF THESE QUESTIONS). WHAT COUNTRIES SUPPLY FOODSTUFFS TO CANADA/BOSNIA? THE LENGTH OF THIS SHOULD BE 2+ PAGES AND YOU MAY ADD MORE QUESTIONS IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE CUISINE/FOOD IN THE TWO COUNTRIES. For Unit 11 – Employment: Zaposljenje the following are the course goals and expectations:

-given pictures of various occupations you should be able to name the job title and ask and answer questions about where each works, what each does, and what tools are needed using Bosnian.

-you should be able to express likes and dislikes related to job duties and working conditions in Bosnian.

-you should be able to talk about an occupation you may have had (either voluntary or paid) indicating the job title, location, and what you did and what you would like to do in the future using Bosnian.

-given a job application form, you should be able to indicate your name, address, telephone number, former occupation, place and date of your employment in Bosnian.

-translate your resume from English into Bosnian.

-perform a play where you are interviewed for a potential job you want using Bosnian.

-write in alphabetical order a series of five occupations using Bosnian.

-indicate why you would like a particular job using Bosnian.

UNIT ASSIGNMENT: FOR THIS UNIT YOU CAN CHOOSE TO EITHER

For Unit 12 – Using the telephone: Koristiti telefon the following are the course goals and expectations:

-listen to a conversation in the Bosnian words and identify known words and concepts.

-translate a conversation from English to Bosnian.

-answer the telephone in the Bosnian language and indicate parts of the conversation that were most interesting/crucial.

-question a person who has the wrong number using Bosnian.

-discuss the differences in telephone bills in Bosnia and Canada. Explain why it is cheaper to call Croatia than Bosnia-Herzegovina.

-describe location and give address of call in Bosnian.

-carry out a short conversation in Bosnian via telephone.

-use various services over the telephone using Bosnian.

UNIT ASSIGNMENT: YOU WILL PARTICIPATE IN A SKIT/PLAY WHERE YOU WILL CARRY OUT A SHORT CONVERSATION IN THE BOSNIAN LANGUAGE WITH ANOTHER CLASSMATE. USE PAGE 253 OF YOUR COURSEPAK AS A REFERENCE WHEN DOING THIS ACTIVITY.

For Unit 13 – Post Office: Posta the following are the course goals and expectations:

-you should be able to ask and answer queries about services available at the post office.

-you should be able to correctly fill out a money order in Bosnian.

-you should be able to complete forms for mailing a packaging outside Canada using Bosnian.

UNIT ASSIGNMENT: A MINI WORKSHEET WILL BE GIVEN TO SUPPLEMENT THIS SHORT UNIT.

For Unit 14 – Services: Usluge/Servizi the following are the course goals and expectations:

-you should be able to indicate the differences between a chequing and savings account utilizing proper Bosnian terms.

-you should be able to complete forms associated with banking cheques, withdrawal slips, and deposits.

-you should be able to discuss thoroughly all of the services available in a public library.

-you should be able to identify the names of different sports in Bosnian.

-you should be able to compare and contrast the popularity of certain sports in Bosnia and Canada.

-you should be able to translate the foods found on a menu from English into Bosnian.

-you should be able to indicate and translate parts of a restaurant from English into Bosnian and vice versa.

-you should be able to appropriately speak with the restaurant staff in the Bosnian language.
